One of our favourite things to do during the summer months is to update our wardrobe.
The new year presents the chance to refresh, swapping out our old, drab items for fresh, light and bright summer pieces. There’s no better time than the summer to start experimenting with colour, so why do so few of us extend the same mentality to our beauty wardrobe?
This season, make it your new year’s resolution to start playing with colour. Fun, bright colours can instantly boost your mood, so working some seasonal hues into your summer makeup routine is a great way to elevate your state of mind first thing in the morning (particularly on those post-holiday mornings where heading in to work seems all the more difficult!)
What deters most women from working colour into their look is fear - fear of looking inappropriate, juvenile, or simply too different to what they usually look like. The trick to overcoming that aversion to colour is to embrace the art of subtlety. Choose one feature that you’d like to accentuate with colour, then keep the rest of your look natural and fuss-free - think a bold lip with dewy, sheer foundation and minimal eye makeup.
In this instance, we’re opting for fresh skin, nude lips and adding a wash of purple over the eyes. The result? Effortless summer colour.
Step 1. Begin by prepping your skin as you ordinarily would during the warmer months. The key to making a pop of colour look effortless is by keeping the rest of your makeup consistent with what you would normally wear. For this look, we’ve applied the jane iredale Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener and Liquid Minerals to give the skin a healthy, natural glow.
Step 2. We love the look of sun kissed, summer skin, but the dangers of sun damage are simply not worth an unhealthy, “natural” tan. Create a faux glow by dusting the jane iredale Bronzer in Sunbeam over the areas of the face where the sun would naturally hit - namely, the temples, cheeks and jaw lines. This bronzer includes four different hues - blended together they create a natural glow, but we also like to use a fine brush to pick up the peachy pink shades to add a bit of a flush to the apples of the cheeks too.
Step 3. Prime the entire eyelid using a cream shadow, like the jane iredale Smooth Affair for Eyes in Gold. This will give your powdered eye shadows something with a bit of “tack” to hold on to, and it can be used on its own to create a simple eye look for days when you’re really pushed for time - you can even apply it with your fingers! This gold shade is the perfect summer hue to pare back your pop of purple.
Step 4. Purple is the colour of the summer, so we’ve used the new jane iredale PurePressed Eye Shadow Kit in Purple Rain to create this look. Use a large fluffy eye shadow brush to sweep the light purple shade over the mobile lid (the part of the eyelid between your upper lash line and the crease), then use a fine, tapered brush to gently work the deeper purple shadow through the crease to add depth and definition to the eyes. Finish by applying the lightest shade to the inner corners of the eyes to widen and brighten the eye area.
Step 5. Complete your summer beauty look by bathing your complexion in a golden glow. We’ve used the jane iredale 24-Karat Gold Dust to highlight the tops of the cheekbones, the brow bone and the cupid’s bow, giving the skin an ethereal quality.
