How To Create The Perfect Red Lip
There is no beauty look more synonymous with the holiday season than a classic red lip colour. The cosmetic equivalent of the little black dress, a red lip can take you from day to night, can be tailored to suit you, and the right one will make you feel a million bucks.
Mastering the red lip, however, is a bit like shopping for that LBD. It takes a bit of time to get it right, but once you’ve got the right ingredients on hand you’ll find yourself relying on this staple beauty look whenever you feel like you need a lift. We’ve broken down all the products you need on hand to customise your ultimate red lip- and they’re all available in our limited edition Party Red Trio Beauty with Brilliance 2017 gift set.
The key to any bold lip look is the prepping of your pout. Apply a hydrating lip balm, like our LipDrink Lip Balm in Sheer, to create the smoothest possible canvas for colour.
If you’re new to a bold lip, ease your way through that beauty apprehension by starting out with a tint - our Just Kissed Lip & Cheek Stain in Forever Red is a tried and tested favourite. This stain adds a subtle and hydrating wash of cherry red to the lips and can be applied either straight from the bullet or pressed into the lips for a worn in, tinted look. This stain is a handbag essential as the colour translates just as well when applied to the apples of the cheeks and can be used on the go.
If your red-lip-anxiety stems from a fear of drawing outside of the line, opt for a crayon formula like our PlayOn Lip Crayon in Hot. A lip crayon makes it easy to apply your lip colour as you don’t need to be quite as precise with it, plus the crayon shaped tip lends itself to working within a line. A lip crayon is great as you can build up the colour depending on how amped up you want your red lip look to be.
For the red lip traditionalist, you’ll need a red lipstick plus a taupe lip liner. Why not a red liner? A nude, like our Lip Pencil in Spice, will mimic the natural hue of your lips. Once applied, your lip liner will prevent your lipstick from bleeding, without leaving behind a telltale red line. You can also use the nude lip pencil to subtly cheat the shape of your natural lip line! When it comes to applying red lipstick, we recommend using our Retractable Lip Brush for more accuracy rather than working directly from the bullet. This will allow you to stay precisely within the lines, as well as letting you build up layers of colour for greater opacity. Our favourite red lipstick? Our PureMoist Lipstick in Gwen, a neutral toned red that suits all skin tones.
Dialled down or amped up, the holiday season is the perfect time to whip out this truly timeless beauty look. Watch our Gwen PureMoist Lipstick application video:
