What is Clean Makeup vs Natural Makeup?

jane iredale is best described as a clean mineral makeup that is also good for your skin and that is why it is known as The Skincare Makeup.

You may often hear the word “Natural” being associated with mineral makeup, however you can’t always rely on natural makeup products and their ingredients to be the best for your skin. Some can be quite harmful and contain traces of the types of ingredients that we are trying to eliminate, such as heavy metals and other toxins.

This is why we like to refer to jane iredale as “Clean” rather than “Natural”. Clean makeup products have been the mineral makeup pioneers’ quest from the start. This should give you an extra sense of assurance that everything you are putting on your skin is safe for it to be there.

What is Mineral Makeup?

True mineral makeup does not contain any bulking ingredients such as talc, nylon, starch and other undesirable ingredients. Instead, all jane iredale ingredients are consciously “skin-loving” and not only do they enhance your natural beauty but they are designed to work as an extension of your skincare. jane iredale is clean, pure pigment, mineral makeup as our formulas are free from toxins and other questionable ingredients that are drying on the skin, sensitising to the skin and may clog pores and cause allergies. Our formulas are also free of any type of synthetic preservative such as parabens or synthetic fragrances that are usually used to mask chemical smells.

Skin-Loving Formulas

Two of these skin-loving ingredients that are included in some of our mineral-based makeup products are: Titanium Dioxide & Zinc Oxide. You will notice that at least one of these ingredients is included in the majority of our products. Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide can help to soothe the skin and soothe redness and they are both active physical sunscreens. Titanium Dioxide is found in all six foundation formulas in the jane iredale collection and Zinc Oxide is included in Amazing Base Loose Powder, PurePressed Base, Glow Time Pro BB Cream and HandDrink Hand Cream. Zinc Oxide is also known to be a natural antiseptic.

Another powerhouse ingredient is antioxidants! Pomegranate Extract, a potent antioxidant, helps to aid in minimising UV damage and helps fight free radical production caused by sun exposure. This amazing ingredient can be found in a number of our products including our best-selling Pommist Hydration Spray and also PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation, Amazing Base Loose Powder, Dream Tint Tinted Moisturiser and some of our colour powder and lip products. Including Pomegranate extract in these formulas provides powerful antioxidant protection to the skin and it also adds natural flavouring to our lip products.

Other powerful antioxidant ingredients include Green Tea Extract, Pine Bark Extract and Apple Extract. Green Tea Extract is found in Balance Hydration Spray, and Smooth Affair Brightening Face Primer. It is known to increase the effectiveness of sunscreen and helps to prevent irritation of the skin.

Pine Bark Extract, which helps to soothe the skin, can be found in PurePressed Base and our beautiful bronzing powders. Apple Extract acts as a skin smoothing antioxidant and can be found as one of the key ingredients in Smooth Affair Brightening Face Primer as well as Glow Time Pro BB Cream and HandDrink Hand Cream.

Skin Healing Ingredients

We also have healing ingredients such as Aloe Vera, which has a variety of skincare benefits such as skin soothing, calming, healing and it is a natural anti-inflammatory. Applying Aloe Vera helps to provide a protective layer on the skin and it also helps to retain moisture. It's rich in antioxidants and minerals that help to boost the healing process and can be found as a key ingredient in HydroPure Tinted Serum with Hyaluronic Acid and CoQ10.

Cucumber Extract, which can be found in Active Light Concealer, assists in adding hydration and reducing puffiness around the eyes.
